In Hinduism, Lord Shiva is regarded as the ‘Supreme deity’ and the creator of the universe. People of all religions and beliefs devote Lord Shiva in the form of holy Jyotirlingas located across different locations in India.

There are around 64 jyotirlinga shrines; however, 12 shrines are considered as most auspicious and sacred. Jyotirlinga shrines in India that are worshipped as the symbol of the deity. #1 Somnath Temple, Gujarat:

The first and foremost jyotirlinga shrine is located in Somnath, Gujarat in the famous Somnath temple.

It is known to have built by the Moon in pure gold after getting rid of a curse and regaining its light by worshipping Lord Shiva.


#2 Mallikarjuna Swamy Temple, Andhra Pradesh:

Mallikarjuna Swamy temple located in Srisailam in Andhra Pradesh is known to be the second auspicious jyotirlinga shrine in India. Senior citizens travel groups visit here at regular intervals of time to receive the blessings of Lord Shiva.

According to Hindu mythology, Lord Shiva and Parvati descended to the sacred place to calm the distressed Kartikeya when his younger brother Ganesha was getting married before him.


#3 Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga, Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh

Mahakaleshwar temple in Ujjain is known for the third Jyotirlinga, also known as Dakshinmurti Swayambhu (self-manifested) which means that linga derives power from the ‘Shakti’ within itself.

Senior travellers can worship the Omkareshwar linga situated on the first floor and is open round the year for visitors. The Nagchandreshwara Linga, located on the third floor of the temple, opens exclusively on the day of Nagpanchmi.


#4 Omkareshwar, Madhya Pradesh

Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga is situated in the Onkareshwar temple that stands as a fantastic three-storied structure on an Om-shaped island (Mandhata) on Narmada River.

Senior travellers may also visit Mamaleshwara jyotirlinga located on the mainland. Also, there are several shrines en route to the island.


#5 Baidyanath Temple, Deogarh

Vaidyanatha Jyotirlinga temple, located in Deogarh, is one of the twelve sacred jyotirlingas and is also known as Baba Baidyanath Dham.

Ravana offered his all ten heads to Lord Shiva as his sacrifice in exchange of the boons to wreak havoc in the world. Shiva pleased from his sacrifice and acted as a vaidya (doctor) to cure the injured Ravana.


#6 Bhimashankar, Maharashtra

Bhimashankara, the sixth sacred abode of Lord Shiva is situated on the hills of Sahyadri Range in Maharashtra. Tourists from across the world can enter the Sanctorum in the Maratha style temple made up of black stone and touch the Jyotirlinga.

#7 Rameshwaram, Tamil Nadu

Rameshwaram is situated in the Pamban Island Tamil Nadu and is popular due to the bridge built up to Sri Lanka by Lord Rama to defeat Ravana.

One of the most sacred Jyotirlinga is known to built by Lord Rama to seek the blessings of Lord Shiva for defeating Ravana. Shiva appeared to shower his blessings on Rama and then returned to this Jyotirlinga.


#8 Nageshwar, Gujarat

Nageshwar jyotirlinga is located near Dwarka in Gujarat. Lord Shiva in its Nageshwar form, defeated Daruka, a demon and his army to rescue Supriya, an imprisoned devotee.

Tourists are allowed to enter the Sanctorum for performing ‘Abhishek’ on the linga as well as to worship the idol of Dakshinamurti.


#9 Kashi Vishwanath Temple, Varanasi

The Kashi Vishwanath Jyotirlinga is the ninth, yet the most significant Jyotirlinga on Dwadasha Jyotirlinga Strotram.

Saints from all the religions and spiritual beliefs, including Goswami Tulsidas, Adi Shankaracharya, Guru Nanak, Swami Dayanand Saraswati, Swami Vivekanand, Sant Kabir etc. have visited this temple have known to visit this Jyotirlinga.


#10 Trimbakeshwar, Maharashtra

Trimbakeshwar is located on the banks of River Godavari in Nasik, Maharashtra. The place is among the most popular Hindu cities where Kumbh Mela is held every 12 years.

Shiva granted a jyotirlinga to Gautam Rishi and his wife Ahilya and released a stream of the Ganges which is now known as the Godavari.


#11 Kedarnath, Uttarakhand

Kedarnath, situated in the Rudraprayag district of Uttrakhand, is the highest and the farthest among all jyotirlinga shrine. Located in the Great Himalayas, it is named after King Kedar who ruled here in Satyuga era.

#12 Grishneshwar, Aurangabad

According to Hindu mythology, Grishneshwar is a sacred jyotirlinga situated in the Verul village near Ellora Caves, 30 kms from Aurangabad and 11kms from Daulatabad.
